Modern Hexagon Crochet Blanket Pattern Inspiration

I’m always interested in knowing where a fellow maker gets their inspiration from. Did they see a beautiful image in a magazine? Did they invent something new out of necessity? I thought I’d let you in on my own process . . . and tell you a bit about my latest crochet design!

In a world filled with decades of beautiful crochet patterns to choose from I enjoy the challenge of creating something new. That’s why I draw my inspiration from unconventional places:

A painting inspired a tapestry crochet hat.

A hardwood floor layout inspired a cardigan design.

A cotton sock inspired a crochet slipper.

A braid inspired a cable sock.

The possibilities are endless and that’s why I rely on Pinterest to keep my muses organized.

I browse the web, see something that makes my heart happy, “Pin it”, and forget about it. Later, when I’m looking to create a new crochet piece, I go to my Pinterest board and scroll through the inspirational images. When something jumps out at me I start to think about how I want to recreate the look. In the case of my newest design (below) a hexagon & chevron bathroom tile mix really caught my eye. I knew the pattern would be too large to duplicate on a small scale (say for a hat or mittens) so I decided a blanket would be a good surface to showcase the modern look.

Now . . . how to recreate the shapes? I first considered tapestry crochet or colour changes of some kind to show off the design (alternating black and white to create the geometric pattern). That would be time consuming (and a yarn eater). Next, I wondered if ‘cable crochet’ would do the trick (picture raised stitches to outline the design). That seemed like another yarn hog and a bit too heavy for the Summer blanket I wanted to create. Finally, I remembered the success I’d had translating a geometric design I liked last Summer (the chevron wood floor pictured above) into a kimono cardigan (also pictured above) . . . I used FILET CROCHET!

If you’re not familiar with “Filet Crochet” it’s when you crochet a piece using only two stitches (the chain and the double crochet). The technique creates ‘holes’ that highlight the design you’re trying to make. It’s an easy, quick, and yarn friendly way to create a pattern.

I’m really happy with the finished result. The blanket is light and airy but still cozy. Hexagons are popular right now and this pattern uses them but in a fresh way. With 4 sizes ranging from a baby stroller blanket to a king size blanket you can crochet one for any part of your home. BONUS: the pattern also includes instructions on how to create a scarf, shawl, table runner, etc. in this modern geometric filet crochet design!
